Responsibilities of an Instrumentation Head:

Project Management

  • P&ID checking and review.
  • Preparation of detailed list of existing Instruments which have to be removed relocated and reused.
  • Preparation of Loop drawing, JB cable scheduling and I/O scheduling for new instruments both in DCS and ESD PLC loop.
  • Selection of IS & Non-IS Cables & Cable Glands (Field and Panel side) for area specific Analog & Digital instruments.
  • Spearheading responsibility of instrument air header pipe routing, cable & cable tray routing and new JB installation related jobs.
  • Preparation of instruments Hook up drawings.
  • Field instruments installation, calibration and loop checking.
  • Following jobs are performed at DCS (Honeywell TPS) end:
    1. Preparation of detailed Panel Loop Diagram.
    2. Point building.
    3. Graphics pages creation and modification.
    4. Logic Implementation as provided by MITSUI Technology.
  • Following jobs are performed at ESD TMR PLC (TRICONEX) end:
    1. Preparation of detailed Panel Loop Diagram.
    2. Point building and SOE modification.
    3. Logic Implementation as provided by MITSUI Technology.
  • Supervise the entire project execution and commissioning activities of HDPE unit capacity expansion project.
  • Spearheading responsibility of managing the gamut of operations pertaining to planning, arranging, directing & controlling of instrument maintenance & project related activities.
  • Evolving effective Annual Operating Plan for the resources to optimize the man & machine utilization, reducing wastes for enhancing productivity and profitability.
  • Ensuring Health and Safety requirement are adhered to at all times in accordance with laid down company procedures as well as the provisions of Health and Safety legislation.
  • Evaluating the results of all PCPs (Plant change Proposals), identifying recurring problems and preparing recommendations for Executives about significant changes that needs to be made to resources, procedures, systems or technology.

Instrumentation & Control

  • Work on PLC I/O datasheet preparation and programming using Functional block diagram and Ladder logic.
  • Proficient in DCS I/O datasheet preparation, control loop design using functional blocks, sub system communication, Trend assignment, Graphics building.
  • Contribute in undertaking activities related to manpower planning for schedule and preventive maintenance jobs specially DCS and PLC systems, Control Valves of different type, Condition Monitoring Systems of Rotating Machineries and Electronic Field Instrumentation.

Erection and Commissioning

  • Conducting inspection, pre-commissioning and functional testing to ensure the performance capacity of various machines and equipments.
  • Supervising commissioning activities viz. installation, simulation and loop checking of various instruments during Supermax Revamp Project; in adherence to the company’s standards and specifications.
  • Managing project erection / commissioning & startup activities, including tuning of process control loop design & implementation for smooth operations.

Maintenance Operations

  • Planning and effecting preventive maintenance schedules of various equipments and instruments to increase up time and equipment reliability.
  • Planning of Opportunity based (OBSD) or Annual Shutdown (ASD) jobs, man power and resource management and co-ordination with other engineering department.
  • Pivotal in looking after activities related to record keeping and other documentation works as per IMS (Integrated Management Standards).
  • Instrumental in finding out critical areas and analyzing root causes of the problems, minimizing them to get maximum availability of instruments.
  • Responsibility of maintaining spare parts, planning and undertaking activities related to department cost control.
  • Look after safety norms and encouraged others to follow these norms so as to achieve 100% implementation of safe working and accident-free environment.

How to become an Instrumentation Head:

Educational Qualification requirement to become an Instrumentation Head is Diploma in Instrumentation Engineering or Diploma in Electronics Engineering or Graduate in Instrumentation & Control Engineering (BE/BTech) or Graduate in Electronics Engineering (BE/BTech) from an accredited Institute/College approved by AICTE in India. But to become a Instrumentation Head, educational qualification is not the only requirement. At least 15 years for a degree engineer and 20 years for a diploma engineer of experience in a factory as Instrumentation and Control engineer will be necessary.
